Student Work
In my classes, students learn design methodologies such as competitive analysis, ethnography, brainstorming, and concept validation to innovate design solutions for organizations and broader social issues.
The Juniors work with local organizations in semester-long projects in unframed problem spaces, learning to use design research to uncover needs. In the first semeseter, the students learn about deep issues surrounding brand and experience and take their research to the point of envisioning a preferred future state. The Seniors work from the opposite end: Working in teams, they choose a social issue and find community stakeholders and collaborators to inform, guide, and implement their solution.
The lessons the students learn arm them with tools and abilities not common in the world of undergraduate design education.
V310: Identifying Problems
In this studio class, students learn design theory and methods for managing the complex visual communication design needs of institutions. Students direct inquiries in unstructured situations with undefined problems to manage expressions and impressions. Students are urged to choose an organization that means something to them personally.

V320: Facilitating Solutions
In this service learning class, students work in teams with local organizations serving as clients. Students are placed in unframed situations, using research to discover needs for any variety of issues affecting their organization. Solutions have ranged from an entirely new brand identity to communication pieces to fully-developed campaigns.

V410: Designing for Innovation
The seniors work in cross-disciplinary teams to discover and innovate solutions for broader social issues.
Students conduct both primary and secondary research to gain grounding and insight into their chosen issue. As part of their research, students must identify and invite subject matter experts to work with them towards a meaningful solution.
The students conduct brainstorming sessions, perform concept validation, rapid prototyping, and develop a kit they can hand off to those who can implement their design solution.
